Mumbai’s own Vedant Panesar, a chess Fide Master, has secured a coveted spot in the 2026 Tata Steel Challengers tournament in Wijk aan Zee, Netherlands. He achieved this by winning the qualifiers with a score of 6/9, finishing half a point ahead of a competitive international field.
“Playing at Wijk aan Zee is a dream of every chess player. Winning at Wijk aan Zee, where the best chess players in the world compete, is truly special. Qualifying for the Tata Steel Challengers 2026 is a dream come true, and I hope to return next year as a Grandmaster,” expressed the Fide Master.
Vedant Panesar’s Chess Journey
In December 2023, Vedant earned his International Master (IM) title, marking a significant milestone in his chess career. He secured his first IM norm at the Maia Open 2022 in Portugal, followed by his second at the Qatar Masters 2023. His final IM norm came at the Vezerkepzo Fall GM 2023 in Hungary. By December 2023, he had surpassed the 2400 Elo rating barrier, with his rating reaching 2452.
In July 2024, Vedant continued his impressive form by winning the 2nd G H Raisoni Memorial Pune Rapid Rating Open. He scored an unbeaten 8.5/9, finishing half a point ahead of the competition.
Support System and Future Aspirations
Vedant attributes his success to the unwavering support of his friends and family. “I’m incredibly grateful to my friends who rallied around me and helped me prepare for this tournament. Their support made a huge difference,” he noted. He also acknowledged the backing of Old Bridge Mutual Fund and Tata Steel Chess for providing him with the opportunity.

Looking ahead, Vedant recognizes the need to build a professional team to reach the next level. “I know that to reach the next level and be fully ready for the Challengers, I’ll need to build a professional team around me,” he stated.
Mumbai’s Emerging Chess Scene
Traditionally, Chennai has been recognized as India’s chess hub, producing many top players. However, Vedant’s achievements highlight the growing chess talent emerging from Mumbai. As he prepares for the 2026 Tata Steel Challengers, the chess community eagerly anticipates his future accomplishments.
