Assam’s rising chess talent, Viraj Sarawgi, has made headlines by securing a silver medal at the Bangkok Rapid Chess Championship. Competing in the Under-12 category, Viraj delivered an impressive performance, scoring 5.5 points out of 6 rounds.
Stellar Performance in Bangkok
Viraj, a Grade 5 student at Royal Global School in Guwahati, entered the tournament as an unrated player. Despite this, he managed to defeat two seasoned FIDE-rated opponents, Kultungkijsaree Poom and Juntongjin Prin. His only loss came against the tournament’s ultimate champion, Ayan Mukherjee.
Inspiration and Guidance
Viraj draws inspiration from Grandmaster D. Gukesh and aspires to follow in his footsteps, aiming to become a world champion one day. He has been honing his skills under the expert guidance of renowned coaches Durga Nagesh Guttula and Shrikanth Malladi. Coach Durga Nagesh Guttula praised Viraj’s natural talent and fearless approach to the game.
