On International Women’s Day 2025, Indian Chess Grandmaster Vaishali Rameshbabu took over Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s social media accounts. Through this platform, she shared her journey, encouraged young girls to pursue their dreams, and emphasized the importance of family support in achieving success.
Vaishali expressed her excitement on X, writing, “Vanakkam! I am @chessvaishali, and I am thrilled to be taking over our PM Thiru @narendramodi Ji’s social media properties and that too on #WomensDay.” She reflected on her chess career, stating, “Playing chess has been a learning, thrilling, and rewarding journey. I feel proud to represent our country in global tournaments.”
Vaishali Rameshbabu’s Chess Journey and Achievements
Born on June 21, 2001, in Chennai, Vaishali Rameshbabu developed a passion for chess at a young age. She is the elder sister of Grandmaster R Praggnanandhaa and has carved her own path in the world of chess.
Her notable achievements include:
- Winning the Girls’ World Youth Chess Championship (U-12) in 2012 and (U-14) in 2015.
- Achieving the Woman International Master (WIM) title in 2016.
- Becoming a Woman Grandmaster (WGM) in 2018.
- Securing gold at the Online Chess Olympiad 2020 with the Indian team.
- Earning her International Master (IM) title in 2021.
- Attaining the Grandmaster (GM) title in 2023, making her only the third Indian woman to achieve this feat.
A Powerful Message for Women and Parents
During her takeover, Vaishali encouraged women to chase their dreams, writing, “I want to give a message to all the women out there, especially young girls—follow your dreams, no matter the hurdles. Your passion will power your success.”
She also urged parents to support their daughters. “I’ve also got a message for parents and siblings—support girls. Trust their abilities and they’ll do wonders. My parents, Thiru Rameshbabu and Thirumathi Nagalakshmi, have always encouraged me. My brother, Praggnanandhaa, and I share a close bond. I have also been fortunate to have excellent coaches and teammates, and I am very inspired by Vishwanathan Anand sir.”

PM Modi’s Women’s Day Initiative
Prime Minister Narendra Modi reaffirmed his commitment to women’s empowerment through various schemes and initiatives. As part of this, he allowed women achievers to take over his social media on Women’s Day.
He wrote on X, “We bow to our Nari Shakti on #WomensDay! Our Government has always worked to empower women, reflecting in our schemes and programs. Today, as promised, my social media properties will be taken over by women who are making a mark in diverse fields!”
This initiative isn’t new. In 2020, PM Modi handed over his social media accounts to seven women achievers, providing them a platform to share their stories and inspire millions.

Vaishali highlighted the increasing support for women athletes in India, stating that the country is making progress in providing training, exposure, and opportunities. She also expressed her aspirations to improve her FIDE ranking and contribute further to chess.
