On their rest day, Norway Chess grandmasters swapped rooks for ropes, diving into rodeo activities at Westernbyen, a lively Western-themed village in Algard, near Stavanger. Consequently, the “Chess Cowboy Challenge” united 12 players for a thrilling day of wild west tasks, showcasing their versatility. For instance, Magnus Carlsen, Gukesh D, and other stars embraced the cowboy vibe, creating unforgettable moments away from the chessboard.

Top Players Gallop into Westernbyen’s Cowboy Challenge

The Chess Cowboy Challenge boasted a dazzling lineup. Specifically, Magnus Carlsen, nicknamed “The Lone GOAT,” and Gukesh D, “The Chennai Sharpshooter,” led the men’s roster. Additionally, Arjun Erigaisi, Hikaru Nakamura (“The Blitz Bandit”), Fabiano Caruana (“The Sicilian Sniper”), and Wei Yi joined in. Among the women, Koneru Humpy (“The Hammer”), R Vaishali (“The Rising Rider”), Ju Wenjun (“No-Loss”), Lei Tingjie (“The Lockdown”), and Anna Muzychuk (“Ice Veins”) competed eagerly. Notably, Ella Carlsen, “Honorary Cowgirl,” filled in for Spain’s Sarasadat Khademalsharieh. “Switching to lassos was such fun,” Carlsen told Norway Chess’s official site.

Each team paired a man and woman, tackling challenges like a Sheriff’s memory test, axe-throwing, lasso tosses, cowboy quizzes, and horse riding. Moreover, these tasks tested their quick thinking and skill. For example, Ella Carlsen shone with her sharpshooting.

Magnus and Ella Carlsen Triumph in Rodeo Activities

Ultimately, Magnus and Ella Carlsen claimed victory as “Chess Sheriffs,” dominating with their all-around talent. Meanwhile, Nakamura and Muzychuk grabbed second place, and Caruana with Vaishali took third. Furthermore, Gukesh and Ju Wenjun secured fourth, while Erigaisi and Humpy finished sixth. “Winning alongside Ella was a thrill,” Magnus shared. Held on May 30, 2025, the event recharged players for round five. Additionally, Norway Chess’s creative rest-day activities, as highlighted on their website, foster team spirit. Back on the board, Carlsen leads with eight points, Caruana follows with seven, and Gukesh and Erigaisi, tied for fourth, plan a comeback.
