Chess electrifies the Esports World Cup 2025 in Riyadh, fusing ancient strategy with modern esports excitement. From July 31 to August 3, 16 elite players, including Magnus Carlsen, Hikaru Nakamura, and Arjun Erigaisi, compete for a $1.5 million prize pool. Partnered with Chess.com, this rapid-format debut delivers thrilling battles. Meanwhile, global fans eagerly anticipate a historic clash.
Rapid Chess Thrills at Esports World Cup
Sixteen players, each tied to an esports team, face off in a rapid 10+0 format. Each game allows 10 minutes with no increment. Consequently, this setup guarantees intense, strategic showdowns. Twelve players qualify via the Champions Chess Tour’s online events in February and May. Additionally, a Last Chance Qualifier in Riyadh from July 24-26 fills four spots. Ties resolve with an Armageddon game, amplifying excitement. “Bringing chess, the mother of all strategy games, to the Esports World Cup is a truly exciting moment,” says Ralf Reichert, CEO of the Esports World Cup Foundation.
